Tapolca, a town famous for its caves and streams, is situated in the west part of the Balaton highlands, in the so-called Tapolca basin. Surrounded by hills of volcanic origin, the town was built in an area, where in pre-historic times the waves of the Pannonian Sea were breaking on the shore.
